Lisa, Your assumptions are correct, the codes must become part of a valid medical code set , such as CPT4, to be valid as per HIPAA.
Our plan will only accept HIPAA compliant codes. Since the codes are not valid HCPCS, CPT4, ICD9, or CDT3 codes, they would not be acceptable and would be denied as invalid. -----Original Message----- From: Sweeney, Lisa [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, May 13, 2002 9:36 AM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'; '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: ASA Homegrown Codes As you may be aware most anesthesiologists use the ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) Relative Value Guide and ASA Crosswalk reference guides as their source for coding the services they provide to our members. Our health plan has discovered 3 new ASA homegrown codes not published in the 2002 CPT book - 00326, 00834, 00836. I am assuming that per HIPAA ASA codes are no longer the accepted standard. The ASA must get their codes adopted by the AMA as a CPT. How are other health plans handling ASA homegrown codes? Are you rejecting these codes presently?
