The ASA is a recognized standard that the AMA works with and usually adopts
their coding for anesthesia. The ASA codes are published in the front
section of the AMA CPT book.
In response to the issue of 3 codes (00326, 00834, 00836) not in the
current 2002 book, we would need to ascertain if the AMA is going to
recognize and include these three codes in their next update or the reason
why the code(s) will not be included. I apologize, but I do not have a
new 2002 ASA book to validate if these codes are new or not. The 2001 ASA
book does not contain these codes.
Thanks,

It is my understanding that CPT has adopted some, but not all, ASA codes.
Therefore, the codes that are not adopted into CPT will be considered
non-standard or local codes and not usable on a HIPAA transaction.

I could easily be incorrect, but I thought ASA codes were listed in the
front of the CPT book as being part of CPT codes....? I don't have a CPT
book here to check this though. If they are part of CPT, then they are
HIPAA compliant.
