Hi, I think in addition to place/lat-long; species, numbers etc. we would need to include season, and most importantly the Microhabitat where they are found/observed. My observations in the last few years has shown that Microhabitats are critical for local populations; as well as seasons which also include temperature, impact microhabitats which in turn impact insects/butterflies/moths. By including the microhabitat we will be taking the documentation a step ahead towards (a)understanding the habitat of insects/butterflies, and (b) possible conservation measures both at the local level and at a larger level such as Protected Areas, (c) and possibly see the impact of climate change on insects/butterflies. Hope this does not complicate things. Janaki Turaga

Any ideas on how shall we do that ? Yes, in general butterflies have been fewer post-monsoon this year. For example, I have seen rather few Common Mormons & Lime Butterflies - and both are usually numerous. And I have seen no Common Jays and the last few years at least they have been fairly common too. On the other hand, I kept finding good numbers of Common Silverlines, Lime Blues and Plains Cupids... best wishes Amber From: JANAKI TURAGA <janakituraga@ yahoo.com> To: ButterflyIndia@ yahoogroups. com Sent: Wed, November 11, 2009 10:20:36 AM Subject: Re: [ButterflyIndia] Red Pierrots in Delhi Hi, I had seen Red Pierrots in Delhi both in 2007 and 2008-not many but in home gardens. I had posted one in august 2008. In Gurgaon, this year butterflies have been scarce and I think I have spotted this entire year just one and none after monsoon. The long and hard summer has been tough on butterflies and insects-there are few visible this year unlike last year which had good and sustained monsoon unlike the 4 day downpour this year. Hope this helps Janaki Turaga --- On Tue, 11/10/09, Amber Habib <a_ha...@yahoo. com> wrote: From: Amber Habib <a_ha...@yahoo. com> Subject: [ButterflyIndia] Red Pierrots in Delhi To: butterflyindia@ yahoogroups. com Date: Tuesday, November 10, 2009, 3:44 PM Hi, I would like to ask other people from/around Delhi if they have seen any Red Pierrots (Talicada nyseus) recently. I had been seeing a few in S. Delhi consistently since 2004 - esp. post monsoon - and then last year there was a sudden explosion - they were everywhere and even people not otherwise too interested in critters would point them out to me and ask about them. I also found them - for the first time - in Aligarh, 120 km away. They were present in large numbers till about mid May. But this monsoon and after - nothing - not one. What is others' experience? It is particularly interesting because historically this is not a Delhi species and is completely missing from earlier checklists. best Amber ************ *** Amber Habib Mathematical Sciences Foundation -- Enjoy
