i gathered data on populations of pune butterflies during 1992-93. we could
follow the methods i used for that study in delhi and other places. the methods
and results of my study can be found in:

Kunte, K. J. 1997. Seasonal patterns in butterfly abundance and species
diversity in four tropical habitats in northern Western Ghats. Journal of
Biosciences, 22:593-603.

of which a PDF can be downloaded from:

http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~kunte/Publications.htm

i have appealed several times on this group to start regular monitoring of
butterfly populations in various parts of the country. if people are already
seeing some trends and are interested in them, it is high time we form a
network and start collecting data regularly. we have quite a few members now,
spread almost all over the country. this could be good.

Hi

I guess this is bringing us to need of recording populations of the
butterflies, and a system to put the data together. Any ideas on how shall we
do that ?

Regards,

Vijay

  Thanks!

Yes, in general butterflies have been fewer post-monsoon this year. For
example, I have seen rather few Common Mormons & Lime Butterflies - and both
are usually numerous. And I have seen no Common Jays and the last few years at
least they have been fairly common too. On the other hand, I kept finding good
numbers of Common Silverlines, Lime Blues and Plains Cupids...

  best wishes
  Amber

        Hi,
I had seen Red Pierrots in Delhi both in 2007 and 2008-not many but in
home gardens. I had posted one in august 2008.
In Gurgaon, this year butterflies have been scarce and I think I have
spotted this entire year just one and none after monsoon.
The long and hard summer has been tough on butterflies and
insects-there are few visible this year unlike last year which had good and
sustained monsoon unlike the 4 day downpour this year.
        Hope this helps

          Hi,

I would like to ask other people from/around Delhi if they have seen
any Red Pierrots (Talicada nyseus) recently. I had been seeing a few in S.
Delhi consistently since 2004 - esp. post monsoon - and then last year there
was a sudden explosion - they were everywhere and even people not otherwise too
interested in critters would point them out to me and ask about them. I also
found them - for the first time - in Aligarh, 120 km away. They were present in
large numbers till about mid May.

But this monsoon and after - nothing - not one. What is others'
experience?

It is particularly interesting because historically this is not a
Delhi species and is completely missing from earlier checklists.

          best
          Amber
