I will be giving a Zoom presentation for BVARC on-the-air event volunteers on
Sunday May 14th 6pm-8pm, and again on Monday May 15th 6pm-8pm. To clarify, it
will be the same presentation both nights, so please attend whichever one is

If you are interested in being a volunteer to help at our events (such as Field
Day and Parks on the Air), this will be essential training.
There will be at least 4 different training activities before Field Day to get
all of our volunteers ready to operate the stations, to help set up and
breakdown, and most importantly: to be able to talk to all of the general
public and new hams who come to these events and get them on the air!
Sunday and Monday will be BVARC Spec-Ops Training #1. In this presentation, I
will cover the following:
* What is Field Day and POTA?
* Approaching and talking to the general public and new hams.
* Safety and politeness in ham radio.
* Operating on HF: band plans, operator etiquette, hunting vs calling CQ,
Q-codes.
* Exchanges for Field Day and POTA.
* Logging, log file types, and uploading logs to QRZ and POTA.app
* Basic HF Radio settings you need to know.
* A little about impedance.
* Connectors and cable basics.
* Special considerations for multi-radio HF operations.
* Fielding questions about Field Day and POTA and getting familiar with all
of the great stuff BVARC does.
Lots of extra study material will be provided for those interested in more
detailed and technical training beyond the scope of this lecture. I only have 2
hours, so I will cover the basics. As always I will be available for questions
after the presentation or any time via email, on the air, or by phone.
After Training #1, comes... BVARC Spec-Ops Training #2! That training will
cover digital modes for Field Day and POTA, a few other important digital
modes, and a little more technical detail not covered in Training #1.
BVARC Spec-Ops Training #3 will cover the technical details of the antenna
systems we use for Field Day and POTA. Our resident antenna expert Rick Hiller
(W5RH) will be covering this, so I will let him outline his presentation for us
when he has that prepared. Depending on time and the feedback I get, we may
cover some more technical details as well.
BVARC Spec-Ops Training #4 will be an in-the-field lab / TEST DAY. We will
bring out all of the necessary multi-radio operation equipment, and all of the
volunteers will be trained and tested on their ability to set up each radio,
filter, battery, multiplexer, dummy load, antenna, and so on. We will also do
real POTA exchanges and mock Field Day exchanges while practicing logging using
N1MM and HAMRS. BVARC members who attend all training sessions and successfully
pass these tests will be provisional members of the BVARC Spec-Ops team. Once
provisional members of the BVARC Spec-Ops team put in 12 hours at BVARC on the
air events (Field Day, POTA, WFD etc.), they will be awarded the title BVARC
Spec-Ops team member. I'm still working on the insignia we will be
distributing, but if you successfully pass all of the training, testing, and
volunteer hours, you will be given an item you can wear to signify your
successful completion and continued volunteer hours for BVARC.
That is the plan as it stands now. I could not do this alone, and I will be
getting A LOT of help from other members with expertise far beyond my own.
Anthony (W5LIC), Rick Hiller (W5RH) and more, will be advising me and helping
out with this. My goal is to create a team (that I am calling the "BVARC
Spec-Ops team"), which will be composed of our best and most capable operators
to run our events, start their own events, and keep the work of BVARC going for
many years to come. BVARC is the largest (and in my opinion the most awesome)
ham radio club in the state of Texas. We have so many skilled and knowledgeable
members, and we can (and should) expand our events and outreach, and this is
the first step in that journey. Please attend these training sessions, learn
what you can, and bring what you already know to the table. As we get more
capable and experienced operators on the Spec-Ops team, we can do more and
more. We will grow the club, grow our capabilities, and maybe one day be the
biggest and most successful club in the nation. BUT, we cannot do that without
your help!
I look forward to seeing you at the Zoom training sessions and having you and
others we bring into the hobby make BVARC the biggest name in ham radio!
