Hopefully Tyler will comment, as I believe he is fully blind.

I wouldn't worry about the syntax highlighting -- it is useful, but
people have been programming without it for many years. I don't get
the use of it when using a remote Solaris console, usually using vi,
and yu can still program just fine without it.
