Eric, Jon:
The OpenSolaris requirement for Install server applies to the machine
where you create install services. As Jan Damborsky pointed out in an
earlier mail, we are using a technology (dns-sd and mDNS) that is
supported only in OpenSolaris and recent versions of Nevada. So we have
to use a system that supports dns-sd and mDNS. To make setting up
install server simpler, we want to use the IPS , which installs the
dependent packages of our install tools package (SUNWinstalladm-tools)
automatically.
You can still use your existing DHCP server and do the OpenSolaris
Install. You can make any of the machine in your lab as the OpenSolaris
install server. What we have done in our lab is that we continue to use
a Solaris 10 DHCP server that serves Solaris 9, Solaris 10, Solaris
Nevada and OpenSolaris. We took a test machine and installed OpenSolaris
11/08 using livecd installer. We followed the instructions and made it
as an install server for OpenSOlaris. We already have an intsall server
that is used for installing Solaris (which is same as DHCP server). So
it is possible to coexist with a lab that was setup for installing
Solaris Nevada, Solaris 10 and older.
Thanks,
Sundar
