OCaml doesn't have a vm like the jvm. Although there's been some great work on compiling OCaml for the jvm. OCaml does have a toplevel interpreter. It even has a native mode toplevel now that's suppose to be fast (anyone have any experience with this?). So that's good. And of course as you pointed out you can always compile OCaml code to native machine code which has always had good performance.
