BTW, you usually have to have a current regulator so the leds are fed the proper nominal
current (say 20mA).

For the electronicly inclined, my experience with leds on 12v system has been to use a
7808 (8 volt positive regulator) set as a current regulator for say 4 x 2volt leds connected
in series. This protects the leds if voltage gets to high from the battery/charger. A
7812 12volt regulator will work but will cause flashing to occur when the battery voltage
drops too low.
