instructor that the Coast Guard doesn't "approve" any equipment; it either meets or
doesn't meet the regulations. Having said that, we also use the Davis
Mega-Light. If you're following the letter of the law, unless the light is mounted at
the top of the mast, it isn't going to be visible 360 degrees. If you've
anchored at night, you know the biggest concern is some dumbass powerboater
plowing into you... and you can be pretty certain that they are NOT looking up for
an anchor light. We haul ours up just above the boom with a halyard and plug
it into a jumper battery. We strive to be legal, but also want to be as safe
as possible. At anchor, I don't put the sail cover on (incase you need to get
outta there in a hurry), so also count on the Davis light reflecting some off
the main and white deck (we hang it upside down).
