selling for very little on EBAY ( $0.50 each) so I'm going to convert all
my running lights to LEDs. Hopefully USCG won't cite me for having too
bright a lights.
The 78XX would surely work but I do it simply, each LED takes about 3.3V
so 3 of them in series take 10 V so I put in a resistor in series to drop 2
to 2.5V which comes out to about 100 -120 ohms. Actually I connect them and
adjust the resistor for 20 ma, it depends somewhat on which LEDs you
get. For 6 LEDs you just have 2 lines of 3 LEDs and 1 resistors in each line.
I've been doing this for many years and didn't have any burnouts or other
problems yet.
