It CAN and is called either the Gulf of California or the Sea of Cortez! Loreto is approximately 150 miles north of La Paz on the "gulf" side of the baja peninsula. There is an awesome little all inclusive resort there btw (can't remember the name of it). Not sure how well a cat would be as a dive platform, especially hauling heavy equipment. I would think you would want an inflatable for that. Snorkling would be a different story (in my humble opinion) as long as you had a good anchor and a roller furling jib.
Instead of going it alone, why not find a "willing" (in more ways than one) senorita to be your boat tender while you dive!
