Stede,
I think nothing will change your argument, but I think I'll probably
start ignoring this thread.
If you want some historical perspective, check out the arguments Irwin
Feerst was making WRT electrical engineers in the early 1980s. The sky
didn't fall then, either.
Large businesses do many short-sighted things trying to trim costs to
provide an immediate boost to profits. For that matter, small
businesses do, too.
I was recently asked to estimate and quote on some work. The extent
of the job was rather ill-defined, but I wrote the quote documenting
the assumptions I was making. My proposal was dismissed out-of-hand
because my hourly rate was a little over the figure they had in mind
(but hadn't told me).
There are so many silly things about this. If they had told me the rate
they expected to pay, I probably would have accepted the job on those
terms. I've done work at that rate, but it's not my asking price
anymore. If I were less than honest, I could easily pad the
number of hours to get my chosen rate.
XP is about creating value, not reducing cost. Cost reduction taken out
of context is just one of those silly things that business managers do
when they don't know what else to do. And then they're written up in
business magazines and other managers jump on the bandwagon and start a
fad.
If you create value, there's always a way to make a living from it.
There may be pain from social upheavals caused by mass changes in the
business climate, but you can't stop these, anyway. You just have to be
agile enough to keep finding ways to get paid for creating value.
