We have enough amphimbius Assault vehicles that go both on land and
water to make that move.
Now seroisly there were plans (Dont know if they were enacted) in the
cold war to have Nuke Missles shifted around on railroad cars and
barges so that the Russians would not know were they are at any goven
point and time. The Missiles could be fired from these "moble
platforms".
Upstate New York had a number of military bases and the canals were
used to transport jet fuel to the bases as well as oversized radar and
miltary equipment.
As far as industrail use the Erie canal was is used by General
Electric to move turbine and generaters from time to time. For the US
Navy having a all water route from assembly plant to the docks is very
importatant.
