At the time, the largest cotton milling area in the world (AIUI) was
around Manchester (UK), Oldham particularly. The damp climate there
was very helpful to cotton yarn and cloth production, and there were
huge coal deposits nearby (carried to the mills by canal to fuel the
steam plant's boilers) . In fact, it was known at the time as
"Cottonopolis". I suspect that is where the US raw cotton was going.
The Manchester area certainly imported a lot of cotton from India etc.

Cor, this is getting confusing.
The original Enfield is on my local river (the Lee), just outside
London (UK)
There is a lock on the (UK) river Thames at Windsor (where Queen
Elizabeth II lives, you know). Perhaps fortunately, that lock is
actually called "Old Windsor".

We could use some rapids on the Lee at Enfield, to wash away all the
crud that gets deposited in the navigation there.
