In the gathering dusk yesterday afternoon, a hire boat came by heading
up the Lee. Packed to the bilges with young gentlemen in a jolly
mood.

Yes, they failed to notice the junction with the Hertford lock cut
until they were entering the weir stream, started the turn too late,
and ran hard aground. Where they remained for some time, enjoying
revving the engine. Eventually, they reversed a long way back
downstream, took another run at it, and disappeared into the darkness
(and presumably, eventually, the lock).

Yes, this was the time when seriously heavy rain had begun, but
several of the gentlemen were not deterred by this from standing
outside with no umbrellas.

They have just passed again, going downstream. In the sunshine. All
looking very smiley, all outside, all wearing T shirts (are they from
Newcastle?), all apparently dry (externally).

Perhaps there will be a new cohort of boaters after all.
