Very little !

We met a lovely American couple at the bottom of Atherstone on a
Canaltime boat, who were completely bewildered and didnt have a clue
what to do.

Must be a standard recommendation - Pete Neville and I met a (presumably
different!) lovely American couple who were going to do the same route
and were puzzling over the bottom lock in the same way. I suppose the
positive virtue of this route is that it's an out-and-back with only the
relatively harmless Atherstone locks to go up and it's not too busy a
part of the system.
