While we are knocking BW here is the response I received today from a
DEFRA bod following my pre Xmas rant . . . .
Beeky
Thank you for your e-mail dated 22 December to Jonathan Shaw about
British Waterways (BW) mooring charges on the "blankety blank" canal
which has been passed to me for reply. I am sorry for the delay in
replying.
BW is required under its Framework Document to charge market prices
for its services wherever possible. The moorings managed by BW are
part of a wider inland moorings market with three out of four moorings
being provided by a private operator or boat club.
The underlying cause of high mooring charges is a shortage of supply.
Through its New Marinas Unit, BW is facilitating the creation of some
10,000 additional moorings on its network and as these come on stream
upward pressure on prices will diminish. All BWs income is re-
invested in the care of the waterways for boaters and the general
public to enjoy.
Further information on how moorings prices are determined can be
viewed on the BW website at www.britishwaterways.co.uk/mpricing07, or
you can call their customer service team on 01923 201120 for a paper
copy. If after reading this you believe that BW have not applied the
process accurately for your mooring site, please contact your local BW
office with specific reasons why you think they were wrong. If you are
not satisfied with their response the matter can be considered under
their formal complaints procedure.
I hope you find this letter informative and you continue to enjoy the
"blankety blank" canal.
Yours sincerely,
Benjamin Rees
