I have had a Garmin Etrex Legend for 4-5 years now and use it
extensively on the boat and for hiking. I upload routes from canalplan
and download the tracks of my routes onto PC and from there can match
that with photos (synchronise time of camera and Garmin and you can
automatch photo and geo-location). This cam all be neatly uploaded
to mapping software like Google Earth. I also have their Mapsource CD of
the Uk. This is all probably a bit outdated now but still useful and
as I bought mine from Ebay my guess is that they are now much cheaper
from that source.

Oh yes, battery life. Takes two AA and I rotate a set of 4 rechargeables
each pair lasting at least 8 hours continuous use.
