You can buy detailed OS based maps for it (I believe based on 1:25000) and it does turn-by-turn routing for road use as well as direct routes for walking. It has the latest Sirf chipset, a barometric altimeter and an electronic compass. Battery life is good - I get a couple of days heavy use or around a week of lighter usage on a pair of AAs.
