If your Orange mobile phone works, it might be worth considering the Option 515m dongle which Orange are offering for £20 to existing Orange customers if you take on a £5 per month, 18 month contract giving 500MB data. If you only get GPRS data speed (similar to an old 56K dial-up modem) then 500MB per month will be plenty. If it works at higher speeds (3G) then consider upgrading, or if it doesn't work at your location then send it back.
The Option 515m dongle claims to have a high performance antenna. You'll probably still need to put it on the end of a USB extension cable in an upstairs window.
