Arthur replied " ..... Also I am not a BT Total Broadband subscriber, I pay BT
for the line rental and AOL for Broadband and 'phone calls "

Neither am I, we pay BT line and Tiscali/talktalk for service but our work IT
guys suggested all field based workers got an I-Plate. Just go on the BT
website and buy one. @£7.something inc. P&P worth every penny. You will be able
to plug it into your backplate and the plug into it. It cleans up a lot of
noise apparently.

Arthur added " Footnote: It doesn't mean much to me but there are mumblings in
the village about the lines from the exchange being aluminium rather than
copper - does this explain anything to the experts? "

Built in the early sixties then, during the Rhodesian crisis and subsequent
copper shortage - Yes, our estate is exactly the same and the Ally cables case
harden and then break underground. Definitely worth complaining to BT as there
may be a hairline break in your cable feed. There is evidence of BT having to
excavate under the paths about every 3 metres around here ;^)
