That was certainly one of my initial thoughts :-(

But it was only likely to be the local farmer - and I suspect he (like 
most new 4x4 owners who are 'real' farmers) has enough cash in his 
pocket not to be bothered by 70 odd litres of red derv!

Anybody else would have had to drag their ill-gotten booty away along 
the towpath, for a good half a mile - and there was absolutely no 
evidence of that.. I suppose there could be the odd dead body floating 
on top of the derv - that could well account for the symptoms .. lol!

Hopefully, all should be revealed later on, when I pour in the derv 
which I'll be taking up in a big can.

On the small diesel genny question I'm still trying to find somebody, 
reasonably local, with a Makro cash'n'carry card.... its getting very 
frustrating knowing where to buy one but being unable to actually get it 
- and I can't even find anybody selling them retail either :-(
