I wasn¹t going to get into this, but I would suggest that the sound be put
into perspective. The problems getting described now are going into realms
of mis-adjustment and misalignment that I don¹t think have been warranted
yet.
My propshaft makes a kind of a whine at idle in forward, which goes away at
about 1000 rpm and above. The sound is definitely related to the propshaft,
since it goes away in neutral and in reverse.
It has been doing that for the six years that I have owned the boat (when
the engine feels like running at all) and there is no particular ill effect
on the shaft, stuffing box, etc. There is no significant misalignment,
although it should be remarked that the alignment is bound to shift at
little bit when a boat is hauled and relaunched year after year. The packing
nut gets adjusted to about one drop per minute, per specks.
