While that reply was a little tongue and cheek, if the packing gland is to
tight there is a lack of water to provide the necessary lubrication.

Aqua:

My only suggestion at this time would be do not "drive" the propeller shaft
while she is out of the water, as it acts as a lubricant and coolant for the
packing.

Dear List Mates:

I had the guy at the boat yard tighten the packing gland on the drive shaft.

Now when the boat is in drive, there is a whistling sound.

When I put the boat in neutral, the sound stops.

When I put it in drive it makes the whistling sound, but when I increase the
rpm's a little, the whistling stops.

Could this sound be a result of tightening the packing gland to tight ?

If Not, then what could be the problem ?

The boat is a 1977 Catalina 27.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
