Aqua,
Sounds like you need a engine/prop shaft alignment. Probably, the engine
has settled on the bed. The prop shaft has been scouring the stuffing box cap.
When the cap was tightened, new metal was introduced for the shaft to rub on.
Next haulout or whenever you are brave enough to swim under, make sure the prop
shaft goes through the center of the opening in the hull. My guess is the
stuffing box gets hot after being run a while. That should never be, only
warm. Hot is telling you something is wrong.

I had the guy at the boat yard tighten the packing gland on the drive shaft.
Now when the boat is in drive, there is a whistling sound.
When I put the boat in neutral, the sound stops.
When I put it in drive it makes the whistling sound, but when I increase the
rpm's a little, the whistling stops.
Could this sound be a result of tightening the packing gland to tight ?
If Not, then what could be the problem ?
The boat is a 1977 Catalina 27.
