Having a loose foot does not change the action of the vang.

When controlling twist, the angle of the sail, from top to bottom, is
being adjusted.

I do not race, but it was fun some months ago when I did crew during a
race and had the duty of maintaining main trim. I would watch the three
telltales on the main and keep all three indicating proper sail shape by
adjusting the vang and sheet. This boat did have a loose footed main.
