I'm trying to decide between blowing my budget on carbon masts or building traditional hollow spruce spars (which are always repairable, but more likely to NEED repair than carbon). Regardless, I'm hoping to minimize standing rigging, using forestay, an overhead stay or two, and some running backstays on the mainmast. With gaff rig sails, the masts can be large diameter but they're short; often these can be unstayed masts. Just trying to make life a little easier...
There's a report I saw on a guy who pitchpoled his 56' sloop--and when she came back upright, his unstayed carbon fibre mast was still there. Jeepers.
