Hi All,

I have a query regarding RIPng convergence (possibly same issue on RIPv2 as
well). A router is receiving route1 and route2 via two separate interfaces
and the router selects the route with the lowest metric, lets say route1.

When I increase the metric of route1 to be higher than route2, the router
does not switch over to use route2.

It notes the worse metric in a syslog message but does not swith over to
the better route:

*Mar  1 01:50:10.595: IPv6RT0: rip cisco275, Route add
2000:1:1:1100::/64 [*worse
metric 6,* 2]

show ipv6 rip database output:

2000:1:1:1100::/64, *metric 6, installed*
     Serial1/0.1/FE80::2, expires in 167 secs
2000:1:1:1100::/64, *metric 3*
     Tunnel1/FE80::C008:6FF:FE89:0, expires in 169 secs

The only way I can get it to switch over is to clear the route table.

On the flip side, if I modify the metric of the worse route to be the best,
then the routing table flips over automatically.

So it looks when the metric of an installed route is increased, there is no
preemptive switch.

However, when the metric of a worse route is decreased to be the best, then
the routing table is updated with the new route.

Is this the expected operation of RIP?

Cheers
James
