I have read several papers where, in the Results or Discussion sections, the reader is referred to 'Figure N in the Supplementary Material', and find this quite irritating if I'm reading a hard copy of the paper. Supplementary material should be just that - supplementary. It should not be part of the biological argument of the paper. Surely Supplementary Material should only possibly be referred to in the Methods, and only then to point out that information that traditionally would not be available at all, is available online?
