When I was in high school, we did.  The "coloreds" had separate schools to
attend as well.  They could only enter the back of a restaurant and eat in the
hot kitchen, paying the same (or higher) prices as the white patrons in the
air-conditioned dining room.  A tax was charged to register to vote (Poll Tax)
One was required to own Real property in order to register to vote, of course
women did not own property at that time and thus were not allowed to vote.  Of
course the "coloreds" had to sit in the rear of a bus, etc.
I did not read this in some history book, I experienced it.

I am so glad that all this is supposedly behind us.  Remember the women's
rights" amendment to the constitution has not been ratified by the states.
Inequality is still alive and well in the workplace, in the justice system, and
in the tax system in the US.

It will be one more tiny step to end all discrimination, and give to every
citizen the equal rights supposedly guaranteed by the constitution.  It is time
to really end the influence of religion in government, and truly have a
government of the people, for the people  and by the people.  For this to happen
does not require any laws to be changed or passed, just apply the existing laws
equally to all citizens.

I was appalled to see the publicity about Church Leaders advocating the denial
of sacraments to people who indicated they were not going to vote Republican. (I
even posted a diatribe about it.)  Remembering that most Arch Bishops and
Cardinals are actually immigrants, I would have advocated the revocation of
their residency permits and deported them all for their seditious acts.  I am
likewise appalled that the Republican campaign is attempting to prostitute the
churches in the south in their reach for votes.  I am appalled at the split in
the country I was born and raised in and am disgusted with a political
leadership that will prey on that division. I am appalled at the class division
the Republicans so determinedly pursue.

I consider myself Christian but do not believe in imposing my faith on others in
a secular society.  I oppose teaching the youngsters discrimination and hate in
the name of religion, and pray it will end in my lifetime.

Doug.

Good golly. Why don't we have "colored" and "whites" drinking
fountains too? They're just as good, right?
