Why is civil union a token prize? Isn't a "marriage" just a civil union?

Im not 100% clear on this, are gay civil unions given all the same protections and rights, legally, as a married couple?

If I offended you, I apologize. I was not using the word "colored" as a personal epithet. It was a historical reference to how the drinking fountains were labeled.

My point was to say that the offensive practice of separate drinking fountains, which are thankfully in the past, is no different than denying gays the right to marry but giving them the token prize of a "civil union".
