Im a science first person myself, and think that quite a few of our laws based on old religious beliefs are at best silly, and at worst debilitating.

But the fact is that what the majority believe, in a democracy, most certainly does make it "right", in so much as it dictates law. The basic tenet of a democracy is "rule of the majority, respect for the minority". YOu then have to decide if the belief system that has constructed the laws are tolerable.

The majority of people in this society have deemed polygamy abhorrent enough that is has been ruled illegal. If you disagree with that, you are in the minority, plain and simple. Now youv'e got to decide whether this law "disrespects" your minority view enough that you'd prefer a different society all together.

An interesting sidenote to this: the majority of Americans are Christian. The only thing keeping this majority from imposing Christian-only views on the country as a whole is that one beautiful clause that begins "Congress shall make no law........". If that were to ever be lost, that'd be enough to get me to pack up my bags and head for higher ground.

actually the last thing on earth I would want is more than one wife. I cant
keep the one I have happy.

as to my daughter being married to a polygamist, if she was of age and happy
and everything was fine, I wouldnt care.

also, just because the majority of people believe in something, that doesnt
make it good, and certainly doesnt make it right.

i agree that my behavior will always be regulated by a belief system, I just
hope that one day it isnt by one based in religious ethics. seems to me most
parts of society could get by just fine in a logic-based science type of
  structure.
