Your dog was leashed, on its own property and under your control.

There dog was unleashed, on somebody else's property, and not under
anybody's control.

To me it's a cut and dry case.

That being said it's really up to you - do you like these people?  How much
is peace in the neighborhood worth to you?  The vet bill may be relatively
cheap (then again it could skyrocket.) so I'd personally try to be
conciliatory, but definitely not let anybody take advantage of me.  You may
decide to fight paying the bill, but maybe still send over some flowers or
something.  You might offer to help out with the bill in the interest of
charity, but that'll depend on your feelings for the people, their attitudes
and your finances.

But don't accept blame or responsibility!  I would be nice, but always in
the sense of "I understand how you feel and I can imagine how I would feel
if the situation were reversed" and so forth.  But it's simply not your
fault.

As for the "Shaking" - that's perfectly natural.  That's simply how dogs are
(watch any dog with a toy).  We had a similar situation occur with our
little Pekinese growing up and a Golden Retriever we were sitting (guess
which one did the shaking!)  It wasn't as bad (neither dog needed vet care),
but it's scary as all hell to watch.

Subject: Dog question

Today I was in my driveway and I had my dog on his runner next to me.

I'm sure the laws are different from state to state and possibly city
to city but here in Mass where I am there is a leash law. Their dog
was not leashed and mine was. As bad as I feel I don't think I should
have to pay anything.

Does anyone know what the laws are regarding this?  Opinions?
