they seem very firm about not wanting any parental abductions ;) but
they were always very courteous and professional.
I was however a bit stupefied once that I was asked in the Sault why
my car had been at the library so much lately...but that was probably
someone's paranoia. Sault Ste Marie is a pretty small town and New
Mexico probably seems pretty exotic when it turns up right next to a
river which is also an international border. I guess someone reported
it as suspicious :P

The "where were you born" question I remember very specifically. ;^)
We were taking a school field trip to the Toronto Museum of Science - a
school bus full of Junior High School kids. Going into Canada the border
agent came down the aisle and asked all the kids "Where were you born?"
The class ass answered "In a hospital!" causing his toady to bust out
laughing. The border agent said nothing, turned around, asked the driver to
pull over and let us sit for an hour before he came back on and did the same
thing. The class ass wasn't so ready to shoot off his mouth after that.
The Canadian border is (or at least was) often seen as a joke: but those
people demand (and deserve) respect. ;^)
I also think that the crossing at Niagara Falls may be a bit looser than
others but I'm not positive of that. It's definitely, far and away, the
busiest one. Lastly it seems like walking over is less likely to cause
problems than driving over.

True. I've been asked to pull over before, but there were always
specific triggers for this. The Canadians always always wanted to see
custody documents when I told them I was Canadian and the kids were
American.
Going into the States, I had to have a chat with a supervisor once
about why I could not produce my green card, and another time about
why my car had New Mexico tags if I lived in Texas. The sort of thing
a well-organized bad guy would avoid presumably, though if they are
tearing pages out of passports maybe they are not that
