I did a little fund raising.  My knowledge is limited to my
experiences.  These organizations rely heavily on upper execs to bring in
donations.  Essentially you are being paid for your relationships more then
you are being paid to give the nonprofit org a vision, which is usually
what CEOs of large corps are paid to do.  Are they worth it?  My belief is
if you can find someone willing to pay X amount of dollars you, it/you are
worth it.  I believe in the free market economy where the market determines
the price.

Before 9/11, I was told that the big non-profit earners where the usuals -
Red Cross, United Way, and AIDs research.  AID research was supposed to be
number 1 in NYC and some of the pit bulls/money makers where raking in 6
figure salaries.  Who knows it it's true.  I have no problem with it if it
was though.  Plus a low 6 figure salary in Manhattan most likely means you
will be renting for the rest of your life anyways.

You have to be careful though of many of the non-profit orgs.  I always ask
how much on the dollar goes to the organization and then cut that figure by
half as a rough estimate of how efficiently my money is being used.  As an
example, I once got a phone call from some sort of police association.  I
asked the solicitor how much on the dollar goes to the police.  He paused
for a second and asked me to hold as he looked up that info.  A short while
latter he responded that at least, at least, .80 on the dollar would be
kept by his organization as administration cost and the rest would be
forwarded to the police.  To his fairness he was shocked at the figure as
well.  In this case, as a rough estimate, about .10 on the dollar would
benefit police officers.  At least .80 on the dollar would be kept by the
non-profit org as admin costs.  This will most likely cover the execs pay
package and operation costs (while the org gets to claim non-profit status
for tax purposes).  Chop off another .10 as the cost to maintain and admin
the plan on the police side.
