tech support is not the same department as customer support. But for
the record I will confirm that there were huge disincentives to
actually trying to fix anyone's problem. Tell them something and get
them off the phone was the mentality. This was quite some time ago,
mind you. Most AOL technical support is now out of India.

and knowing 3 people who worked at AOL customer support I can say I
think Aol CS are about the shittiest people I've ever met. The tactics
they use to placate users and how they deal with issues is personally
appalling to me. But hey that's AOL for you.

Even though I have in the past had a temporary AOL account myself, you
have to recognize that the average AOL user is not real bright. If you
doubt that check any AOL chatroom at all. As a former technical
support person for AOL, I can assure you of this. Using an AOL address
on a technical list is not going to give people a good percerption of
your intelligence. Sorry. It's like misspellings. Sam is a lot
brighter than he seems when you first read him. Bill appears more
intelligent since he turned on his spell-checker. While I can spell
there are very bright members of my family who can't, so I realize
  there is no connection.

But misspellings, like an AOL account, just make you very easy to
underestimate.

  Okay Larry,

So you are saying that if someone uses an AOL account for email that the
person should have no credibility about what they say?  Just curious
of why you would have such a hypocritical opinion like that?
