That may really the underlying point: to successfully use these labels you
really need to apply them in comparison.  The question "are you a liberal"
is fairly meaningless, however the question "are you more liberal than X" is
much simpler to quantify.

However I still believe that the word "liberal" has been demonized in this
country.  This may be because the right, in general, seems much more fond of
applying these labels.  Last months Bush campaign talking point "Kerry
Edwards: the most liberal ticket ever" was a clear example.

Personally while I think that Edwards is definitely to the left of Kerry I
would consider them both moderates from their voting and statements - in
fact that's one of the my problems with the ticket: they simply don't seem
to differentiating themselves from Bush.  Gore made the same mistake last
time.  However are Kerry and Edwards liberal when compared to Bush and
Cheney?  Yes, definitely.

/me raises hand.

As I said a while back, I don't actually know what, really, a
"conservative" or a "liberal" or "left" or "right" is. I can read
definitions of them, but the textbook definitions don't seem to have
much to do with how the terms are actually used. Mostly, I see the
words being used as epithets. And when they are almost always
synonymous in context with the concepts of "ignorant",
"narrow-minded", etc. And that's for both sides. So it seems like they
are usually semantically meaningless in context. I have a feeling
though that I could spend a lifetime trying to understand what the
words mean.

Based on the positions you, and to a lesser degree Andy, hold, I have
absolutely no problem being labeled as a liberal. I respect that you
have different views than I do, but I just can't agree with many of
them.
