I began college in 1980 and also took night courses in the late 80's and early 90's.
I also worked on campuses in the mid 90's for a contractor. I never lived on a
campus, though, if that makes any difference.

Personally, I don't think that most "intellectuals" would find any kind of racism
acceptable.

As a side note - I remember one day when I worked for a multinational electronics
company as an engineer. A every day we'd sit down in the cafeteria for a break (the
crowd was small but diverse). Anyway, this one day a new hire sat with us (mind you,
this was 1 1/2 hours into his career at this company) and, during the course of the
conversation, he managed to work in some disparaging words against Jews. What a moron
- first of all, none of us shared his opinion (nor wanted to hear it) and, secondly,
one of the group at the table was Jewish. Needless to say - this idiot became a
pariah before even working at this company for 2 hours.

My point is - there are always people that have these opinions and are so inclined to
think that everyone else feels the same way that they have no hesitation to express
their views. They see a group of people that look like they do (in this case, male
and caucasian) and immediately assume that we all have the same morals and ideas. I
personally find it offensive when someone thinks that it's OK to express their racist
views on other races around me just because of my race.

Regards,

Howie
