I just don't play online much anymore, but you're absolutely right about
Quake.

No story, no real consistency, but it just blew everything out of the water.
I still clearly remember the first time I fragged somebody running across a
bridge going over my head.

It just shocked me right there: this was actual, REAL 3D! He was above me!
I was below him! I literally launched a rocket up that guys ass!

It really was something special. ;^)

I will say that there is something to Quake, the first one, it had some of
the best game play, especially for the multiplayer stuff.

But then again, the only reason I like FPS is for the multiplayer aspect,
really the only reason I like most games if because of the multiplayer
aspect :)

To be completely honest I think the whole FPS genre is just plain
stagnating. I've not been really impressed, truly completely impressed with
a FPS since "Thief 2".

At least that tried something new.

Doom 3 looks INCREDIBLE. But the gameplay isn't anything to crow about.
It's good, but still feels stale. Other games get heavy stories, but lack
something else. There's just always something missing.

I'd still rather play Half-Life than Doom3. I REALLY hope Half-life 2 can
compare favorably with the original.

The odd thing is that half-life really didn't do anything insanely better
than others... I still can't say for absolute certain what it has that even
after all these years still makes it the top of the heap. But whatever it
was, it had it. ;^)
