The total enlisted obligation, at least when I was enlisted was 8 years
total. A typical enlistment was 4 years active duty, 2 years reserve
(USAR or Army National Guard) and 2 years IRR. Any combination of years
was acceptable with the restriction of a minimum of 4 years active duty
for anyone enlisting directly into the US Army.

You are correct on the officers. However, after age 65 an soldier could
no longer be activated so the IRR obligation technically ends at 65
(assuming I remember the age correctly).

I enlisted in the Louisiana National Guard so my obligation was called
"6x2," 6 years National Guard and 2 years IRR. If I had extended for 2
more years, I would have had no IRR obligation but could have opted for
extending in the IRR. Unfortunately I enlisted early in 1990 and was
activated in November of 1990. I spent the next 4 years on active duty
mostly in Louisiana.

It was my impression that enlisted ranks only have an eight year
committment to the IRR, while officers have to formally resign their
commission.
