Oh, really?

Regardless of your sexual orientation, why can't we all use: girlfriend,
boyfriend, husband, wife, or significant other?

When I hear partner I think maybe they play in some pool league together or
are partners in some 2-on-2 basketball tournament. Partner is more
associated with games or something not permanent... Like in  a card game....
This time I am Tony's partner... Next time I am Erika's partner. Just
doesn't make sense to me.
