Fair point - so how about this:

1.) Originally he wanted to start his new family with a little seed
money from Terri's tradgedy.  Maybe she mentioned the life support
thing, maybe she didn't, but he decided it was time to move on.

2.) Terri's parents get wind of this and for some reason (maybe they
just love their daughter, maybe they'll score some dough) they decide
to fight the husband's wishes.

3.) At first the parents are a road block but as the fight escalates
it becomes personal to him.  He decides it's a matter of personal
pride to beat the parents and to have the law uphold his rights (which
the parents and now others are trying to take).

And so here we are.
