We thought that I would need a car at one point (I considered taking a new job) and talked about what would be best. Since I've moved to the Boston area I've not had a car. We got the car for her when we got pregnant. If I had my druthers (and I needed the car) I'd LOVE a "Sparrow": http://www.sparrowelectriccars.com/ (Although I'm not sure how it would handle a 300lb man. The same company is also working on a high-efficiency gas model called "Merlin".) It's enclosed and all-weather, highway-capable and parks like a motorcycle - it would have easily dealt with my shortish (12 mile) commute. I really like the idea of these single-person commuter vehicles. Of course I didn't move my job so I can still take the train in the winter and bike in the summer and we're still in an apartment so I've no place to plug-in... but damn I like that little car.
