I've always thought the strategy seemed to be the software - but
package it in a slick funky package.  The thing with Apple products is
that you can only get the Apple Experience (software) if you buy their
platform.

I would see step one of this idea as the UNIX grab: put a slick GUI on
top of a cheap OS.  Switching to Intel would be the next: put the
cheap OS with a slick GUI onto cheap hardware.
