Just to clarify this. The generally accepted start of WW2 was the invasion of Poland and subsequent declaration of war by Britain, France, Australia and New Zealand. I think the date was sept 2 or 3 1939.
The Germans actually had already invaded Czechoslovakia earlier in the year, but Britain signed a mutual assistance treaty with Poland (bit of a strange one as I can't see how Poland could have assisted Britain) about 3 months before the Nazi invasion, hence the declaration of war. Up to that point the British had done their best to appease the Nazis. I would argue, though, that the Anschluss, or union with Austria, was the start of this process, or at least the most evident indicator of it. This took place in 1938. This was fully 3 years before Pearl Harbour. Indeed, the US declared their neutrality in early sept 1939, just after Britain declared war. will -----Original Message----- From: Larry Lyons [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 14 December 2001 14:56 To: CF-Community Subject: RE: Ouch Actually any good history of WWII should have the information. Good that is, meaning that its not an American centric history. All too often most have the impression that WWII started Dec 7 1941, rather than early September, 1939, with the invasion of Czechoslovakia. larry -- Larry C.
