"These have how many living survivors? The Sudan is a genocide now and there are still survivors (for the moment) and it's not being done by white men but by Muslims."
Quite true. And the race and ethnicity of those pepetrating the genocide forms absolutely no part of my argument. Although I'm not surprised that this is a portion of my examples which so many have chosen to put under the spotlight. The Holocaust, however, is treated differently than any other event of genocide and every other attrocity in history. The laws are different, and the penalties are usually harsher in all areas. There is a far greater backlash. The reasons for this that have been put forward so far are : 1) it happened in our century, and there are living survivors. But we've already seen that there are living survivors of several other atrocities, some in this very decade far less century. 2) Certain countries equate any questioning of the holocaust to a Hate Crime by default, and this is not the case in other countries. However, the backlash for such statements is usualy disproportionate in most countries of the world when compared to the backlash for other racist, ethnic, or religious 'hate' speech. Neither of these reasons really explain why the curtailment of Freedom of Speech, or the general acceptance that publishing such items is by default Irresponsible is so widely accepted in the case of Jews and the Holocaust, but no such high degree of recognition of irresponsibility occurs in any of several other examples of insensitivity, bigotry, genocide or racism.
