I suspect, from my talks with them, that cops are in it for the thrill
of the chase. I wished the cops at the coffeeshop happy hunting as
they left to set up a DWI checkpoint Saturday and they seemed to think
that was appropriate.

And I have no problem with that. Some people need to be hunted. Drunk
drivers for instance may be nice people when sober but we've had a
couple horrific incidents here recently involving blotto drivers going
the wrong way on the interstates. One of them had had four DUIs in
Colorado, and should not even have had a license here. He killed an
entire family who were inoffensively driving home a sports event where
one of the kids was playing.

I tend to the utilitarian position -- people do good because they are
rewarded for it, if only by their own good feelings.
