There are a number of reasons I can see for this, research is a good case.
For example, having genetically identical sets of subjects means having to
use far fewer animals than with a heterogeneous sample. Other ideas that
have been advanced is that since cats are very good models for diabetes, by
using a "strain" of cats that will develop diabetes, that will considerably
boost efforts to find a cure for it.
