I've never worked 9-5 in my life. That's 8 hours. Most folks are expected to WORK 40 hours, which doesn't include lunch.. so you get a 9 hour workday with a 1 hour lunch. That's 40 hours a week.
The exception of course has always been shift work.. with no overlapping, you can only be there 8 hours so you get half hour paid lunch break and a pair of 15 minute coffee/smoke breaks. I haven't had one of those jobs in a long time :) I actually work 7:30-4pm usually, and sometimes I take a lunch.. sometimes I don't.
